Latest News / Rakiura Stewart Island Energy Project kicks off

We’re excited to be kicking off the Rakiura Stewart Island Energy Project!

In May Infratec signed a contract with Southland District Council to deliver a 2 MWp solar farm alongside a 4 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on Rakiura Stewart Island. This flagship project will significantly reduce the community’s reliance on diesel—by approximately 75%—benefiting the island’s approximately 490 residents with lower electricity costs and strengthening energy security for the community.

This project draws on Infratec’s extensive experience delivering solar PV and BESS solutions across island communities throughout the Asia Pacific—from microgrid design through to overcoming the challenges of remote island logistics, as well as taking the local community along on the project journey.

Our team was honoured to take part in the sod-turning ceremony and community meeting on Friday, 22 May, marking an important milestone in bringing this project to life. Working in partnership and with the community were central themes from the day – we are very proud to be partnering with Southland District Council and members of the Rakiura community and looking forward to continuing this collaborative engagement model as the project progresses.
